According to my grandfather, who was a native of Wilcox County, the courthouse sits at the highest elevation in the county. Back in the 1990s when the Ocmulgee flooded, I remember him saying that Rochelle would flood before the courthouse would! If you aren’t familiar with Wilcox County, then you should know that the road running on the right hand side of the courthouse in this picture will take you to the Ocmulgee; in fact, you can almost see it from the courthouse. It may be a mile away at the most. I can also remember going down to the river another time it flooded and seeing multiple fishing poles stuck into the ground on the side of the road bed (which is relatively high heading to the bridge) to catch fish in the flooded waters.

Thanks for sharing Julie! I grew up in Fitzgerald, and with relatives in Eastman made many a trip over the bridge, even the old humpback bridge. My mother remembers as a little girl crossing the wooden bridge that was situated much lower in the river swamps, and said it was always a terrifying experience. Thanks again for looking. Isn’t the courthouse beautiful?!
